Solemn Refuge is a one-movement, atonal piano work completed in January of 1996. The piece contains no planned program, but because of its static rhythms and reiteration of the opening three bars, evokes a rather introspective mood. Somewhat near the end of the work, a cadenza-like passage allows the performer to freely expand upon and improvise with the thematic material.
