Le baiser de l'ange (1996-97) [The Angel's Kiss] is a three-movement woodwind quintet based on the poem below. The essence of this composition is much different from that of any of my other works. This quintet was written for my fiancé Denise, as a small token of my appreciation for her love. Based on one of her favorite poems, the music attempts to represent the activities of the two shy angels mentioned in the poem: their first meeting; the bashful and playful antics which take place; and the unfolding of their love, all of which are represented in the first movement. The second and third movements represent the growth and extension of that love. The first movement was completed in August of 1996. After a year's passing, the final two movements were begun in late September of 1997 and completed in December. Consequently, it seemed appropriate that the latter two movements should represent the development of our love with the passage of time. Musically, there are various themes and motives used throughout, each representing individual character traits, moods, and actions. These musical gestures are intertwined and interchanged amongst the five instruments, with each timbre adding its own unique character to the personality of the composition.

The Angel's Kiss

Two angels met one day in heaven above,
Two kindred souls,
Attuned to perfect bliss,
Attracted by subtle powers of love,
Lips greeted lips, and thus was born a kiss.
And since that time, On earth as in heaven,
Whenever faithful lovers meet or part,
Fond lips touch lips,
A fervent kiss is given,
That seals the vows of each devoted heart.
