Gerald 'Jerry' Downen

Marine Recruit Platoon 145 - MCRD San Diego, CA - 1962

I am looking for members of my Marine Corps boot camp Platoon, 145. We poured our sweat and soul into becoming United States Marines during the summer of 1962 at MCRD San Diego.

Under the 'kind guidance' of our Senior Drill Instructor, S/Sgt Way and his crew of Junior Drill Instructors Sgt Pacheco, Sgt Clark and Sgt Broadhead, we ran, did push-ups, side straddle hops, squat thrusts and pull-ups. We executed the manual of arms, drilled on The Grinder, drilled on the streets of MCRD, studied in class rooms, ran obstacle courses, did bucket drills, learned Marine Corps history, polished shoes, polished boots, polished brass, learned discipline, learned how to talk, learned how to walk, learned how to shoot, cleaned our M-14 rifles and learned how to wear the uniform so that once we were considered properly molded and worthy of the title of Marine, we would look like United States Marines.

If you were in Platoon 145 at MCRD San Diego, in the summer of 1962, or know someone who was in Platoon 145 please contact me.

Bill Boykin

I am also looking for William 'Bill' Boykin. Bill was in the same Radar Fundamentals class at MCRD San Diego, as a fellow named Tom Arvoy and me. In March of 1964, the three of us went to Ft. Bliss Texas for training as HAWK Missile Continuous Wave Radar Fire Control Repairmen. Upon completion of our training, all three of us were assigned to 3rd LAAM Bn, 2nd Marine Air Wing, Cherry Point, North Carolina. Bill went to Alpha Battery, I went to Bravo Battery and Tom went to Charlie Battery. Bill was still at Cherry Point in June of 1965 when I left to go on leave in preparation for my senior trip to Viet Nam. I've been trying to find Bill for several years but there are a LOT of William Boykin's in this country.
Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Bill please contact me.
