I.  U.S. History

The Course

The US HISTORY class is a 20th century survey course for freshmen.  The course is divided into 2 quarters of work, taking the student from the post Civil War period of our history, through to the present.  Well, that's the idea.  In reality, if we can get to 1990, then we've done very well.
The Units covered in the course include:

The key to this course is for the student to gain a sense of perspective and understanding of how America has become a world power and what challenges continue to test ours security and well-being.  It is not the intent of the instructor to instill an attitude of "America, love it or leave it."  Rather, students will take a critical view on American history, appreciating the positives and understanding those forces which created the many negatives that have affected our overall development as a nation.
Critical Thinking is an important part of this course.  Students take on American History by putting the people and events under a microscope, taking events apart in order to develop a complete and more unbiased attitude of the American story.  This is not a course that incorporates just the retention of facts.  While facts are important, it is the ability to use those facts as a basis for analysis that is the key student success.
As important as critical thinking is, a great deal of emphasis is placed on the concept of QUALITY.  Students are expected to create QUALITY WORK as a part of their daily routine.  Samples of quality student work will be routinely posted at the quality work link. This page will focus on curriculum ideas for teachers and current course work that can be of particular use to both students' and their parents.
